How to Use a Spring Bar Tool
A spring bar tool is the difference between a clean strap swap and chewed lug holes. Fork to release, pin to seat, cloth under the case — that is the whole method.

What the tool is
Most spring bar tools are double-ended:
- Fork tip — compresses and guides the spring bar out of the lug
- Pin tip — seats the bar cleanly on install
You are moving a spring-loaded pin that holds the strap between the lugs. Control matters more than force.
What you need
- A double-ended spring bar tool — W&S spring bar tool on Amazon
- A soft cloth under the watch
- The new strap, sized to your lug width (often 18, 20, or 22 mm)
- Optional: spare spring bars in the correct diameter/length
Confirm your watch uses spring bars, not screw-in bars or a proprietary system, before you start.
Step 1 — Support the case
Lay the watch face-up on a soft cloth. Brace the case so it cannot roll. Work on one lug at a time.
Step 2 — Release the old strap
Insert the forked tip into the gap between strap and lug. Compress the spring bar and ease that end out of the lug hole. Repeat on the other side. Keep undamaged bars if you plan to reuse them.
Step 3 — Seat the new strap
Fit a spring bar fully into the new strap end. Compress with the tool, guide one tip into a lug hole, then the other tip into the opposite hole until it clicks home. Use the pin tip to finish seating if needed. Repeat for the second strap end.
Step 4 — Tug test
Gently pull each strap end away from the case. If a bar walks out or feels soft, reseat or replace it before you wear the watch.
Common mistakes
- Using knives, scissors, or paperclips — they scratch lugs and bend bars
- Skipping the cloth — casebacks and bezels pick up desk marks fast
- Forcing a bar that is the wrong length or diameter
- Ignoring screw-in or proprietary strap systems
When not to use a spring bar tool
If the strap is held by screws, or the brand uses a quick-release or proprietary system, stop and use the method that brand specifies.
